Gennaro Borriello Cameos
John Kessler of Kessler Manufacturing and Imports is the representative for the Italian Company Cammei SRL (Gennaro Borriello, President) in the United States and is married to one of Borrellio's daughters. He is one of the top experts on cameos in the country. All new cameos are hand carved in Torre Del Greco, Italy. Kessler stresses that the two essential characteristics of an Italian cameo are: 1) It is concave, because a shell is never flat; 2) It is translucent, and when held up to the light you can almost see through it. While the cameos have themes of Greek and Roman mythology, Kessler points out that the American public has mostly been interested in the traditional lady's profile. The number one criteria used by Kessler to judge the quality of cameos is the quality of the carving craftsmanship "If a cameo is a special artistic carving, and also has high relief, it is consider very fine. The more dimensional a cameo is the more it resembles a piece of sculpture. Most of the very fine ones seen in museums today are like this."
